It’s becoming increasingly clear that the climate change battle will be won or lost in cities. Over half of the world´s population now lives in urban areas. Urban centres account for roughly 75 percent of the world´s global energy consumption, and for 80 percent of greenhouse gas emissions. City administrators are taking note. Many are looking at the challenge from a global perspective and considering diverse sustainability initiatives that can be applied locally. A research projects sponsored by Siemens focuses specifically on technological levers that could help London to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, water usage and waste disposal by 2025. A second study for Munich looks even further into the future, and shows paths toward a carbon-free future.
