Siemens has successfully completed testing of the world’s first 800-kV converter transformer

Following successful final acceptance testing at the Siemens transformer factory in Nuremberg, the world’s first 800-kilovolt transformer for extra-high-voltage DC transmission systems (HVCD) is ready for delivery. The transformer will be used in the “Yunnan-Guangdong” high-voltage DC transmission system (HVDC) in China, one of the two HVDC systems with the highest rated capacity in the world. more

Digital Graffiti at Linz Research Night

Working in cooperation with scientists from the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, researchers at Siemens have developed a system that directly transmits information on local places of interest to mobile devices. Known as digital graffiti, these virtual sightseeing tips are like electronic post-it notes. A special application designed to demonstrate the practicability of the system is now being showcased for the first time at the Linz Research Night on September 26. more

 

Intelligent Sensors for Monitoring Pipelines

In the future, a special sensor system could be used to automatically monitor kilometers of pipeline for signs of damage resulting from either wear and tear or vandalism. Researchers from Siemens Corporate Technology are now working on a new generation of such sensors. One potential field of application is the Russian oil and gas industry in Siberia. more
