The new CT-system named Somatom Definition uses two X-ray sources and two detectors at the same time, and enables clinical imaging with unknown temporal resolution. It was introduced in November 2005. Siemens Medical Solutions unveiled the world's first dual source computed tomography (CT) system, a breakthrough that will redefine the role of CT. The Somatom Definition delivers images of the highest quality and cardiac detail, even of rapidly or irregulary beating hearts, with as much as 50 percent less radiation exposure. The Straton x-ray tube, which was nominated for the German Future Prize 2005, is responsible for this tremendous advancement in diagnostic imaging.
