Power Transmission and Distribution
Siplink (Siemens multifunctional power link) is a system for medium voltage direct current power transmission that can be used to improve the stability of power supply systems and optimize the load flow. Based on a self-commutated IGBT pulsed converter, this technology provides a means of linking networks with no notable increase in the short-circuit power of the subnetworks. No phase control reactive power is needed and no harmonics-induced system perturbations occur. With a converter switching frequency of three kilohertz, nearly all voltage waveforms and a highly dynamic current build-up are possible. At the same time the power flow can be controlled very rapidly.
The linked networks can have different voltage levels, a different neutral-point connection method and different frequency and phase relation. The linking of networks also offers potential savings on investment and operating costs. If the load in an existing network is increased, a costly network expansion can be avoided or postponed by using Siplink to create a link to an adjacent network.
Power supply reliability is also increased because part of the network can continue to be operated via the back-to-back link in case of a supply failure. The linking of distribution networks also allows the power exchanged between the two networks to be adjusted precisely by regulating the effective power, thus providing a way to minimize the costs for electricity procurement.
