A car spends the majority of its lifetime parked. An electric vehicle can therefore be easily charged in the parking garage while its owner is shopping or at work. If several hundred vehicles draw electricity from the supply network simultaneously, large amounts of electricity are quickly accumulated which can be networked via substations. Siemens has had this kind of network technology in its portfolio for a long time. It is currently being adapted for use in the Smart Grid. Parked vehicles can of course also be used as electricity suppliers. In the future, when millions of electric cars are connected to the supply network, they will even be able to buffer the fluctuating supply of solar and wind power. Smart Grids, and with them electric cars, will thus counteract power failures – even in the event of heavily fluctuating power generation.
