The share of offshore wind farms supplying European energy is increasing. In strong winds, Denmark could today generate more electricity with existing wind turbine generators than the country consumes. However, the fluctuations in the generators, a result of the weather, make more intelligent networks necessary for further expansion of capacity. One day, these might, for example, automatically switch over in good time to other generators during periods of calm weather without becoming unstable. In the pictured Lillgrund offshore wind farm in the Öresund between Malmö and Copenhagen, 48 Siemens SWT-2.3-93 wind turbine generators with an output of 2.3 megawatts each have been installed.
