In cooperation with partners, Siemens has developed a system that continuously monitors donated blood with the help of RFID chips. The chip clearly identifies the blood bags from the blood donor to the patient. It also contains a temperature sensor. That’s important because blood spoils quickly, and it’s crucial to ensure an uninterrupted cooling chain. A clinical test at the University Clinic in Graz, Austria, was successful, and Siemens is now introducing the system to the market with several pilot customers.
