The Russian variant of the high-speed Velaro train, which is currently leaving the Siemens plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen, will be in service between Moscow and St. Petersburg from the end of 2009. All aspects of the train — including its technologies, insulation, and lubricants — have been specially designed for the extreme climatic conditions in Russia.
In the climatic wind tunnel of the testing facility of Rail Tec Arsenal (RTA) in Vienna, Siemens specialists subject the “super train” to the most extreme climatic conditions before it is put into service by the customer. The tests are intended to ensure not only functionality and safety but also comfort for the passengers in the train’s interior. Wind speeds of up to 300 kilometers per hour and temperatures as low as minus 40 degrees Celsius can be created in the climate chamber.
