Miguel Coll introduces an extinguishing process which uses nitrogen. With this method, the fire is smothered by filling the room with a non-combustible gas, thereby suppressing the oxygen. If the oxygen content in a room falls below a certain percentage, the flames will be extinguished. Extinguishing systems using natural gases, such as nitrogen extinguishing systems, function according to this principle.
In the Sinorix H2O Gas, Siemens has combined this principle with water in order to provide optimal protection for particularly sensitive applications such as archives containing old documents or books. The nitrogen extinguishes the fire and the mist of water helps to reduce the ambient temperature to below the flashpoint, preventing hot items from reigniting. At the same time, the volume of water used is so low that even valuable historical papers are not damaged. The process received the Security Innovation Award 2008.
