The Siemens Industry Automation Division has made the commissioning of Profinet configurations considerably easier. The new functionality allows users to predefine the cabling of the devices as a setpoint topology in the Topology Editor of Step 7. This means that it is no longer necessary to specify individual device designations during commissioning. Instead, the initialization is performed automatically by the Profinet system. This reduces potential sources of errors and also saves time when commissioning.
Above all, the new functionality offers advantages in series machine construction and in large plants with numerous Profinet IO nodes. In addition, it simplifies the replacement of a defective device when maintenance is required. The user designs the planned IO configuration in advance as usual. Once the data has been downloaded to the IO controller, the configured and connected devices are installed automatically and are immediately ready for data communication.
