The Siemens Industry Solutions Division (IS) has received an order from the Lithuanian cement producer, Akmenės Cementas AB, to supply the electrical equipment for a new kiln line. The project is worth more than five million euros and also includes the engineering work for the entire plant infrastructure. The new kiln line will have an annual capacity of 1.5 million metric tons of cement by the completition of the project in 2011.

With an annual output of about one million metric tons, Akmenės Cementas is the biggest cement producer in the Baltic states and the only company of its kind in Lithuania. The company, which was established in Naujoji Akmenė in northern Lithuania in 1952, draws on extensive limestone and clay deposits in the region for its basic raw materials. As part of a comprehensive modernization project, Akmenės Cementas plans to convert its cement production from the wet process to the more efficient and ecologically sound dry process by 2012.
For the new kiln line, Siemens is providing the power supply equipment, including medium-voltage switchgears, Motor Control Center (MCC) panels, power distribution transformers and a diesel generator. Process control will be handled by the Simatic PCS7 control system and Cemat industrial software. An integrated management information system will provide the operator with an up-to-date view of the production status at all times and long-term archiving. The scope of supply also includes the instrumentation and lighting. In addition, Siemens will be responsible for engineering the entire technical infrastructure of the kiln line – including cable routes, grounding and lightning protection – as well as for commissioning and customer training.
The project is being handled jointly by Siemens IS and Siemens UAB of Lithuania. This will facilitate the implementation of local manufacturing, engineering and after-sales services.
