Siemens has received an order from San Diego Metropolitan Transit System (MTS) for the delivery of 57 S70 type light rail vehicles (LRV). This order is worth approximately €140 million (US$205 million). These new LRVs will be completely built in the Siemens plant in Sacramento, USA. Deliveries will begin in 2011.
MTS is currently operating 134 Siemens-built LRVs in San Diego. “Once again, an order from San Diego strengthens our position as a leading supplier of mass transit vehicles in the USA. You’ll see only light rail vehicles made by us running in San Diego, every third LRV in North America comes from Siemens,” said Hans-Jörg Grundmann, CEO of Siemens Mobility. The new vehicles are slated to replace part of the existing fleet on the city’s “Blue Line” and “Orange Line”. Both lines are being upgraded for the deployment of these new LRVs with funds for the civil work provided by the economic stimulus package based on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, which includes over €6 billion (approx. US$9 billion) for the investment in public transit.
In San Diego, MTS operates a track network of 83 kilometers (over 50 miles) and a municipal bus system covering 95 bus routes. Last fiscal year, MTS was able to set a new record in the number of boardings in the region by carrying a total of 91 million passengers.
