In addition to the environmentally compatible design of our products and the energy efficiency of our production facilities, our Environmental Portfolio also plays a major role in protecting the climate. The Portfolio is comprised of outstanding products and solutions that make a direct and verifiable contribution to environmental and climate protection. In fiscal 2009, the Portfolio generated revenue of about €23 billion.
These products and solutions helped our customers reduce their CO2 emissions by 210 million tons in 2009 – which is a multiple of the amount of CO2 that Siemens itself produced with its own business activities. In the coming years we intend to further increase the contribution of our Environmental Portfolio toward reducing customer emissions – and have set a goal of at least 300 million tons in 2011.
In fiscal 2009 too, the audit firm PricewaterhouseCoopers will examine the revenue and CO2 abatement of the Portfolio. Their examination will be based on the criteria of the Green House Gas Protocol initiative launched by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Resources Institute. In 2007 and 2008, as part of a limited assurance engagement, PricewaterhouseCoopers examined the company’s revenues, CO2 abatement and basic methods for determining which products and solutions should be included in the Environmental Portfolio, and approved them without qualification. Details are provided in our current Sustainability Report and the "Energy efficiency and environmental care" brochure.
