The first orders received by the company founder Werner von Siemens led him beyond the borders of his own country. Having opened a representative office in London in 1850, the company expanded its presence eastward with the construction of a Russian state telegraph network in 1853. The company founded a Russian branch office, based in St. Petersburg, in 1855. Large-scale international projects like the construction of an Indo-European telegraph line from London to Calcutta in 1870 and the laying of a trans-Atlantic telegraph cable from Ireland to the United States in 1874 are other milestones of the company’s early international scope. Today, Siemens is one of the world’s leading international corporations, with a worldwide presence in nearly 190 countries.
